How to Add llms.txt to Your Squarespace Site
Squarespace makes it easy to build a beautiful website. Making that website visible to AI search engines requires one more step. Here is how to add an llms.txt file to your Squarespace site so that ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity can understand and recommend your content.
The Squarespace Challenge
Squarespace is a managed platform, which means you cannot simply upload a file to your root directory via FTP or a file manager. Unlike WordPress or traditional hosting, there is no direct filesystem access. But there are effective workarounds.
The goal: Make your llms.txt content accessible at a known URL so AI crawlers can find it. Ideally at yoursite.com/llms.txt, but alternative placements work as well.
Step 1: Generate Your llms.txt Content
Before worrying about placement, start with the content itself. Our generator analyzes your Squarespace site and produces a properly structured file with your pages, services, and business information.

Step 2: Choose Your Placement Method
There are three approaches for Squarespace, ranked from simplest to most technical.
Create a Dedicated Page
- In your Squarespace dashboard, go to Pages and create a new blank page
- Set the URL slug to
llms-txtso it lives atyoursite.com/llms-txt - Add a Code Block and paste your llms.txt content wrapped in a
<pre>tag - Remove the page from your navigation so it does not appear in your menu
- Disable the page header and footer if your template allows it
This is not a perfect root-level file, but AI crawlers can still find and parse the content on this page.
Code Injection + External Hosting
- Host your llms.txt file on a service like GitHub Pages, Netlify, or a simple static host
- In Squarespace, go to Settings → Advanced → Code Injection
- Add a
<link>tag in the header pointing to your hosted file:<link rel="llms-txt" href="https://your-host.com/llms.txt">
This approach keeps the file externally hosted but links to it from every page of your Squarespace site.
Cloudflare Workers or CDN Proxy
If your Squarespace site uses Cloudflare (or you can point your DNS through Cloudflare), you can create a Worker that intercepts requests to /llms.txt and serves the file directly. This achieves true root-level placement without modifying Squarespace at all.
Squarespace-Specific Considerations
Include your booking and scheduling pages
If you use Squarespace Scheduling or Acuity, include those URLs in your llms.txt so AI can direct customers to book with you.
Highlight your portfolio or gallery
Squarespace excels at visual portfolios. Reference your portfolio sections with clear descriptions of the work you showcase.
Add your blog or journal
If you publish content on Squarespace, list your key blog categories. AI uses blog content as a strong authority signal.
Reference your Squarespace Commerce products
For Squarespace stores, treat product categories the same way Shopify stores handle collections — lead with categories, not individual items.
Keep your site description concise
The one-line description at the top of your llms.txt is what AI uses as its primary understanding of your brand. Make it count.
