How to Add llms.txt to Your Shopify Store

Shopify powers millions of online stores, but most of them are invisible to AI search engines. When a customer asks ChatGPT “best organic coffee subscription” or tells Gemini “find me a minimalist wallet under $50,” AI pulls from structured data it can understand. Adding an llms.txt file gives AI that structure.

Why Shopify Stores Need llms.txt

AI systems are increasingly how people discover products. Unlike traditional search where customers browse pages of results, AI delivers direct recommendations. The stores that AI understands best are the ones it recommends.

Product Discovery

AI recommends products by understanding what you sell, who it is for, and what makes it different.

Brand Authority

A structured llms.txt signals to AI that your store is well-organized and trustworthy.

Competitive Edge

Most Shopify stores have not done this yet. Early adoption means disproportionate visibility.

Step-by-Step: Adding llms.txt to Shopify

Shopify does not allow direct file uploads to your store's root directory the way a traditional web host does. There are two reliable approaches.

1

Generate Your llms.txt File

Use our generator to create a properly structured file tailored to your store. Enter your Shopify domain below and we will analyze your products, collections, and pages to build an optimized llms.txt.

2

Option A: Theme Editor (Recommended)

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes
  2. Click Actions → Edit code on your active theme
  3. Under Templates, click Add a new template
  4. Create a template called llms-txt with the content type “page”
  5. Replace the template content with a Liquid file that outputs your llms.txt content as plain text with the correct content type header
  6. Create a page in Pages using this template at the path /pages/llms-txt
3

Option B: Shopify App or Proxy

For true root-level placement at yourstore.com/llms.txt, you can use Shopify's App Proxy feature. This routes a URL path through an external server that hosts your file. Several Shopify apps are emerging to handle this automatically. Alternatively, if you use a custom domain with Cloudflare or another CDN, you can serve the file via a Worker or edge rule.

Shopify-Specific Tips for Your llms.txt

E-commerce stores have unique needs. Here is what to prioritize in your file:

Lead with collections, not individual products

AI systems work best with organized categories. List your main collections with clear descriptions rather than dumping every SKU.

Include pricing context

Phrases like 'premium handmade goods starting at $35' help AI match your store to buyer intent queries.

Highlight what makes you different

Shipping policies, materials, origin story, sustainability practices — these are the details AI uses to differentiate you from competitors.

Add your policies page

Returns, shipping, and warranty pages build trust signals that AI weighs when making recommendations.

Keep it current

Update your llms.txt when you launch new collections or seasonal inventory. Stale data leads to stale recommendations.

How AI Recommends Products

When someone asks an AI assistant to recommend a product, the model considers several factors: relevance to the query, structured data it can parse, brand signals from across the web, and how clearly the store communicates what it sells. A well-structured llms.txt file addresses the last factor directly — giving AI a clean, authoritative summary of your catalog without forcing it to parse your entire site.

This is especially powerful for niche Shopify stores. If you sell artisanal hot sauces, handmade leather goods, or specialty pet products, AI needs to understand your niche to recommend you for the right queries. Generic product pages alone rarely provide enough context.
