How to Add llms.txt to Joomla

Joomla runs on your own hosting, which means adding a llms.txt file is refreshingly direct. You place it in your site root beside the robots.txt Joomla already ships, and the default rewrite rules serve it straight from disk.

Generate the content

Begin by generating the file. Our tool reads your published Joomla pages and drafts a properly structured llms.txt. Enter your domain, review, and download it ready to upload.

Writing it by hand

To author the file yourself, remember it is plain Markdown: a title, a summary blockquote, and grouped links to your canonical Joomla menu items and articles.

Save it as plain text named exactly llms.txt with a plain-text or code editor.

Placing the file in the site root

Upload it to your Joomla installation's root — the directory that holds these files:

  • index.php — Joomla's entry point
  • configuration.php — site settings
  • robots.txt — created from robots.txt.dist
  • .htaccess — renamed from htaccess.txt for SEF URLs

Use whichever tool you normally use to manage Joomla files:

  • cPanel File Manager — open public_html and upload
  • FTP/SFTP — connect with FileZilla and drop the file in the root
  • Host dashboard — most managed Joomla hosts expose a file browser

The result should be:

https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt

Why Joomla serves it automatically

When SEF URLs are on, Joomla's .htaccess routes requests to index.php only when the path is not a real file or directory:

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule .* index.php [L]

Because llms.txt is a physical file, the !-f check stops the rewrite and the file is served as-is — the same reason your existing robots.txt loads. On Nginx, ensure your config has a try_files $uri step so existing files are served before the Joomla front controller.

Verify it works

1

Open the URL

Visit https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt and confirm you see plain-text Markdown, not a Joomla template or a 404.

2

Check the response

curl -I to confirm a 200 served as text/plain. If it 404s, verify the file is truly in the root, not in a subfolder.

3

Validate links

Every URL in the file must resolve to a live Joomla page or article. Fix broken or redirecting entries.

4

Run a visibility check

Use our AI Visibility tool to confirm the file is reachable and parseable from the public internet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does llms.txt go on a Joomla site?

In the same folder as Joomla's index.php, configuration.php, and robots.txt — usually public_html or the directory your domain points at. A file placed there is served at /llms.txt, exactly like the robots.txt Joomla ships as robots.txt.dist.

Do I need to edit Joomla's .htaccess?

Normally no. Joomla's htaccess.txt (renamed to .htaccess when SEF URLs are enabled) only routes to index.php when the request does not match a real file or directory. Because llms.txt exists on disk, Apache serves it directly. If you disabled the default rewrite block, re-add the RewriteCond that checks for existing files.

How do I upload it if I only have the Joomla admin panel?

Joomla's Media Manager is scoped to the images directory, so it cannot place a file at the root. Use your host's cPanel File Manager, an FTP client like FileZilla, or the file manager in your hosting dashboard to drop llms.txt into the site root.

Will a Joomla update remove the file?

Core updates replace Joomla's own files but do not delete a custom file such as llms.txt that you added to the root. As a safeguard, keep a copy outside the webroot or in version control so you can restore it after any full redeploy.

Does llms.txt guarantee AI systems will use my content?

No. As of mid-2026 llms.txt is a proposed, advisory standard with no enforcement mechanism, and support varies across AI systems. There is no guarantee any model will fetch or use your file. It is a low-cost best practice, not a guaranteed result.
