How to Add llms.txt to Your WordPress Site

Option 2: Create It Manually
If you prefer to write the file yourself, create a plain text file named llms.txt with the following Markdown structure:
# Your Business Name > A one-sentence description of your business > and what you offer. ## Services - [Service One](https://yourdomain.com/service-one): Brief description. - [Service Two](https://yourdomain.com/service-two): Brief description. ## Locations - [Santa Rosa](https://yourdomain.com/santa-rosa): Service area details. - [Petaluma](https://yourdomain.com/petaluma): Service area details. ## About - [About Us](https://yourdomain.com/about): Company history and team. - [Contact](https://yourdomain.com/contact): Phone, email, address. ## Resources - [Blog](https://yourdomain.com/blog): Industry tips and guides. - [FAQ](https://yourdomain.com/faq): Common questions answered.
Save this file with the exact filename llms.txt (lowercase, no extension other than .txt). Use a plain text editor — not Word or Google Docs, which add hidden formatting.
Where to Place the File
The file goes in your WordPress root directory — the same folder that contains wp-config.php, wp-content/, and your existing robots.txt. The final URL should be:
https://yourdomain.com/llms.txtYou can upload the file using any method you normally use to manage WordPress files:
- FTP/SFTP — Connect with FileZilla or your preferred FTP client and upload to the root
- cPanel File Manager — Navigate to public_html and upload the file
- Hosting panel — Most hosts (SiteGround, WP Engine, Flywheel) have a file manager in their dashboard
.htaccess Configuration
WordPress uses .htaccess to route URLs. In most cases, placing the file in the root directory is enough — Apache will serve static files before WordPress processes the request. However, if your file isn't accessible at /llms.txt, add this rule to your .htaccess file, before the WordPress rewrite rules:
# Serve llms.txt directly <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^llms\.txt$ /llms.txt [L] </IfModule>
If your site runs on Nginx instead of Apache, add this to your server block:
location = /llms.txt {
default_type text/plain;
try_files /llms.txt =404;
}Plugin Options
Several WordPress plugins are emerging to help manage your llms.txt file. However, the file itself is so simple that a plugin is rarely necessary. If you prefer a plugin-based workflow:
Manual upload (recommended)
Upload the file once, update it when your site changes. No plugin overhead, no compatibility issues, no updates to manage. This is the approach we recommend for most sites.
SEO plugin integration
Some SEO plugins (Yoast, RankMath, AIOSEO) are beginning to add llms.txt support. Check your plugin's settings under the “AI” or “Advanced” tab. If available, this lets you edit the file from your WordPress dashboard.
Dedicated llms.txt plugins
Search the WordPress plugin repository for “llms.txt” to find dedicated plugins. These typically auto-generate the file from your site's pages and let you customize from the admin panel.
Verify It Works
After uploading, verify your file is accessible:
Visit the URL directly
Open https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt in your browser. You should see your Markdown content displayed as plain text.
Check the content type
The file should be served as text/plain or text/markdown. If it renders as HTML, your .htaccess may need the rule above.
Test with our AI Visibility Report
Run a free visibility report on LLMTXT.co to confirm AI systems can access and parse your file.
Verify in Google Search Console
Check that /llms.txt is being crawled (it will appear in the crawl stats if Googlebot picks it up).
Keep It Updated
Your llms.txt file should reflect your current website. When you add new services, create new pages, or change your business details, update the file. A stale llms.txt with broken links or outdated information is worse than no file at all.
Set a reminder to review it quarterly — or regenerate it with our tool whenever you make significant site changes.
